Questions about private fit notes
The letter
Is this the same as an NHS fit note?
No. This is a private doctor's letter, sometimes searched for as a private fit note. It is not issued by the NHS or a GP surgery, and it is not a GP appointment. Your employer decides which evidence it accepts.
Will my employer accept a private doctor's letter?
Employers set their own evidence rules. Some accept a signed letter from a registered doctor; others ask for an NHS fit note. Check your sickness absence policy or ask HR before you order. HR can also check a letter is genuine online.
Can the letter cover adjusted duties or a phased return?
Yes, if the doctor considers it appropriate. Choose Adjustments to Work Duties in the questionnaire. The letter gives a doctor's view on a phased return, reduced hours, altered duties or workplace adjustments. Your employer decides how to act on it.
What dates can the letter cover?
The doctor decides what, if anything, to certify and which dates the letter covers, based on your answers. One letter covers up to 6 weeks. For longer absences, see your GP.
Who reviews my answers?
A fully qualified, UK-trained, GMC-registered doctor. They review your answers the same day and decide whether a letter can be issued.
Ordering
How long does the questionnaire take?
A few minutes. You choose your letter type and delivery speed, answer the medical questions and pay, all in one form. Answer fully and honestly, because the doctor relies on your answers to decide whether a letter can be issued.
How will I receive my letter?
If approved, your signed letter is sent by email and SMS. If you can't see the email, check your spam folder. You can then forward the letter to your employer or HR.
How fast will I get my letter?
It depends on the delivery speed you choose, from 72 hours to 2-hour urgent. Same day orders must be submitted by 6pm, and urgent orders are taken from 6am to 10pm. Delivery times are estimates. A faster speed doesn't change the doctor's decision.
How does the Express Subscription work?
It covers up to 2 letters a month on the same-day service, with a 3-month minimum term, and our terms apply. Subscription details are sent by email after payment. Each letter is still reviewed by a doctor, who may decline it. Questions about cancelling? Contact us.
Do you issue other kinds of letters?
Yes, we also issue study and travel letters. You choose the letter type at the start of the questionnaire, and a doctor reviews every request.
Refunds and checks
What if the doctor can't issue a letter?
The doctor reviews your answers and may decline. If no letter can be issued, you get a full refund to your original payment method within 3 to 5 working days.
Can my employer check the letter is genuine?
Yes. You share the letter with your employer, and HR can confirm it came from this service: they can verify a letter (opens Dr Sick's website) online.
